Ant Hunt: Towards a Validated Model of Live Ant Hunting Behavior
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biologists seek concise, testable models of behavior for the animals they study. We suggest a robot programming paradigm in which animal behaviors are described as robot controllers to support a cycle of hypothesis generation and testing of animal models. In this work we illustrate that approach by modeling the hunting behavior of a captive colony of Aphaenogaster cockerelli, a desert harvester ant. In laboratory animal experiments we introduce live prey (fruit flies) into the foraging arena of the colony. We observe the behavior of the ants, and we measure aspects of their performance in capturing the prey. Based on these observations we create a model of their behavior using Clay, a Java library developed for coding hybrid controllers in a behaviorbased manner. We then validate that model in quantitative comparisons with the live animal behavior.

Distributed House-Hunting in Ant Colonies Citation
We introduce the study of the ant colony house-hunting problem from a distributed computing perspective. When an ant colony’s nest becomes unsuitable due to size constraints or damage, the colony relocates to a new nest. The task of identifying and evaluating the quality of potential new nests is distributed among all ants. They must additionally reach consensus on a final nest choice and trans...
متن کاملThe Ecology and Feeding Habits of the Arboreal Trap-Jawed Ant Daceton armigerum
Here we show that Daceton armigerum, an arboreal myrmicine ant whose workers are equipped with hypertrophied trap-jaw mandibles, is characterized by a set of unexpected biological traits including colony size, aggressiveness, trophobiosis and hunting behavior. The size of one colony has been evaluated at ca. 952,000 individuals. Intra- and interspecific aggressiveness were tested and an equipro...
متن کاملOn how Pachycondyla apicalis ants suggest a new search algorithm
In this paper we present a new optimization algorithm based on a model of the foraging behavior of a population of primitive ants (Pachycondyla apicalis). These ants are characterized by a relatively simple but efficient strategy for prey search in which individuals hunt alone and try to cover a given area around their nest. The ant colony search behavior consists of a set of parallel local sea...
متن کاملHybrid Improved Dolphin Echolocation and Ant Colony Optimization for Optimal Discrete Sizing of Truss Structures
This paper presents a robust hybrid improved dolphin echolocation and ant colony optimization algorithm (IDEACO) for optimization of truss structures with discrete sizing variables. The dolphin echolocation (DE) is inspired by the navigation and hunting behavior of dolphins. An improved version of dolphin echolocation (IDE), as the main engine, is proposed and uses the positive attributes of an...

127 Abstract— Numerous methodologies have been invented inspired by nature and based on real life behavior of species which perform task in a group. In this paper, a novel methodology based on intelligent chasing and hunting methods adopted by the animals in a group to chase & hunt their prey is presented. The dog is taken as prime model for developing the methodology. The method is named as “D...
